La semilla musicalThe musical seed
Cuatro notas pueden contener una pieza entera. Four notes can hold a whole piece.
No hace falta tener una gran idea: hace falta cuidar una pequeña. You don't need a big idea: you need to tend a small one.
On 22 December 1808, at Vienna's Theater an der Wien, Beethoven's Fifth Symphony premiered. It starts with four notes: three short and one long. That minimal gesture returns again and again, higher, lower, in other instruments, hidden in the accompaniment, and reappears in later movements. Almost the whole work grows from that seed.
More than a century later, Arnold Schoenberg named that procedure developing variation: a piece born from endlessly transforming a motif. Morin would recognise it as the hologrammatic principle: the part is in the whole, and the whole is in the part.

If they brought the soundscapes of their rooms, play two or three before starting: it links the sessions. Then the first thirty seconds of the Fifth. Ask them to identify the motif and raise a hand each time it returns. No score needed: singing it together is enough.

Short, with everyday images, not definitions. If the group wants more theory, hold it back: the game will answer it better than you can.
A thirty-metre tree came from a one-centimetre seed. Today each of you will plant your own."
25 minCrear tu célulaCreate your cell
Each person invents a cell of two to four sounds: sung, played or made with objects. It's recorded on the phone. If someone gets stuck, suggest starting from their own name said out loud.

Tres pases. The cells circulate. Each person receives someone else's and transforms it: faster, slower, backwards, in another timbre, with silences. Then passes it on, and the next transforms the transformation. Three passes.

La preguntaThe question«¿Qué sobrevivió de la célula original al tercer pase?»"What survived of the original cell by the third pass?"
Three short and one long at the centre. Around it, the same cell backwards, inverted, stretched, compressed. Every fragment carries the whole seed.

Beethoven's four notes, without the orchestra. Ask them to sing it back: if the group can repeat it, it's already theirs.
Cuatro transformacionesFour transformations
The same cell inverted, backwards, slower and at another pitch. Ask at which point it stops being recognisable: the answers almost never match.
A random cell and three passes, each with a different transformation. Every time you play it, a new chain comes out. Useful to show the game before playing it.
Qué no es esta sesiónWhat this session is not
-
Adding ornaments around the cell leaves it the same. Transforming it means changing something inside it (order, direction, duration) and seeing whether it's still itself.

If a pass wipes out the cell entirely, the chain breaks. The unspoken rule is that the next person can still recognise something. Say so before starting, not afterwards.

The Fifth is the door, not the room. Thirty seconds are enough. What matters happens when the group plants its own seeds.
Not only is the part in the whole, but the whole is in the part.Edgar Morin · Introducción al pensamiento complejo (1990)Edgar Morin · On Complexity (1990)
Morin illustrates the principle with biology: every cell of an organism contains the genetic information of the whole organism. In the room it looks the same: by the end of the telephone, each version in the chain still keeps something of the original cell, and something of each person who touched it.
Handing over your own cell and hearing it come back unrecognisable stings a little. It's the first time the workshop asks people to let go of what's theirs. It helps to say it aloud: once it circulates, the cell belongs to nobody; it belongs to the group.
Habrá quien diga «no sé música». Someone will say "I don't know music". For that group, use the short version: clapping-only cells, no pitch. The principle shows up just the same.
Qué mirar mientras jueganWhat to watch while they play
Who treats someone else's cell with care and who destroys it efficiently. Who invents transformations and who only decorates: both say something about each person. And the moment a cell becomes unrecognisable, or when someone, without meaning to, brings it back to the original.
