The pulse nobody marks and everyone joins.
Today there's no conductor: the group's order will appear on its own, if nobody gets in the way.
In 1665, ill in bed, Christiaan Huygens noticed that two pendulum clocks hung from the same beam ended up swinging in unison, however much he disturbed them. The beam carried tiny vibrations: each clock "listened" to the other. Three centuries later, physicist Yoshiki Kuramoto wrote the mathematical model of that phenomenon, which also explains fireflies flashing together and an audience's applause falling into step.
For Morin it's a pure case of self-organisation: simple local rules (listen to your neighbour, adjust a little) produce a global order nobody designed. And there's a second finding, from psychology: faced with identical beats, the mind groups them in twos or threes without being asked.
15 minCalentamiento rítmicoRhythmic warm-up
In a circle, clapping a steady pulse for two minutes. You can start with a metronome and switch it off after a minute. The interesting part isn't in the hands but in the head: almost everyone starts to feel groups of two, three or four that nobody asked for.
Puedes decirYou might say«Todas las palmas iguales. Solo escuchen qué hace su cabeza con ellas.»"Every clap the same. Just listen to what your head does with them."

A school of fish moves as if it had a leader, and it doesn't: each fish only watches its neighbours. A jam session works the same way. Share the image and move on to the game; the real explanation will come from the body.
30 minPolirritmia corporalBody polyrhythm
Three subgroups on the same pulse: one accents every three claps, another every two, another every four. They start together and listen to the resulting weave; then they rotate. Every twelve pulses the three accents coincide, and the group notices without counting.
25 minEl juego · «El pulso que nadie marca»The game · "The pulse nobody marks"
The group walks around the room in silence, each at their own speed, without talking or signalling, for three or four minutes. Don't announce what usually happens. If the space is small, do it seated, tapping the floor with the feet.

What were you reading from the group to fall into sync without anyone asking you?"
Twelve lights, each with its own rhythm. When they start watching one another, they gather until they flash together. Then they let go, and it starts again.

They're generated in the browser. Plug in a speaker so the group can hear them well.
Golpes iguales, oídos que agrupanEqual beats, ears that group
Sixteen identical beats. When it ends, ask who heard them in twos and who in threes. Neither answer is in the sound.
Accents every three, every two and every four, coming in one by one. It's the game's polyrhythm: play it first so the group knows what to listen for.
Ocho caminantes, con y sin escuchaEight walkers, with and without listening
The same steps twice. Without listening, they stay scattered. Listening, they meet. The only difference is attention to the neighbour.

Avoid saying "one, two, three, four" out loud. Counting is an external aid; group rhythm is felt from inside and among everyone.

If someone starts setting the pace and everyone follows, the game has turned into something else. Don't forbid it: take it as material for the close.

A living pulse breathes: it rushes, drags, recovers. What matters is that the group holds it, not that it sounds like a machine.
At the heart of the universe is a steady, insistent beat: the sound of cycles in sync.Steven Strogatz · Sync (2003)Steven Strogatz · Sync (2003)
It's the book's opening sentence. Strogatz, a mathematician, devoted his career to spontaneous sync: clocks, fireflies, neurons, hearts. In the room the phenomenon appears at human scale. Your role resembles Huygens's beam: you don't command the rhythm, you let the vibration pass between people.
Walking around the room in silence feels embarrassing for the first thirty seconds. Walk too: if the leader stays outside watching, the game becomes a test. And when the pulse shows up, resist the urge to celebrate it aloud: you'd break it.
Sometimes the pulse doesn't appear. It isn't a failure: ask at the close what got in the way. The answer usually says a lot about how that group listens.
Qué mirar mientras jueganWhat to watch while they play
Who tries to lead without being appointed. Who follows without contributing, and whether that's saving energy or fear of being wrong. The moment the group finds its pulse, and whether it loses it because someone decided to correct it.
