Escuchar el silencioListening to silence

Antes de sonar, hay silencio. Y el silencio ya suena. Before sound, there is silence. And silence already sounds.

The first session doesn't teach how to make sounds: it teaches how to notice the ones already there.

In 1951 John Cage entered Harvard University's anechoic chamber, a room built to swallow every sound. He expected absolute silence and heard two sounds, one high and one low: his nervous system and his blood. The following year, on 29 August 1952, pianist David Tudor premiered 4′33″ in Woodstock: three movements in which he doesn't play a single note. The piece is whatever sounds in the hall meanwhile.

Years later, Canadian composer R. Murray Schafer turned that intuition into pedagogy: "ear cleaning" exercises for schoolchildren and the idea of the soundscape. This session inherits both lines. For complex thought it's also a first dialogic: sound and silence don't exclude each other, they need each other.

15 minEntrada silenciosaSilent opening

Five minutes without talking, writing down everything that can be heard. It isn't a discipline exercise: it's the workshop's first discovery. Around minute three the nervous laughter will come; don't correct it, write it down yourself. At the end, the shared list on the board is usually surprisingly long.

Puedes decirYou might say«Durante cinco minutos no vamos a hablar. For five minutes we won't speak. Write down everything you hear, however small."

Show an orchestral version of Cage's piece and open the conversation: is it music? why did the audience applaud? Don't close the discussion. If the frame turns noise into a work, the group starts to suspect that listening is also composing.

40 minEl juego · «Paisaje con silencios»The game · "Landscape with silences"

In groups of 3 or 4, a two-minute piece where the silences weigh as much as the sounds: voice, objects, clapping, snapping. Ask for the silences to be marked and timed. Your job is to observe, not to fix.

Después, una sola pregunta por grupo: Each group presents; listeners stay silent during the piece. Then, a single question per group:

What did the silence do that the sounds couldn't?"

The line never goes flat. In the marked stretches there's no absence: there's a small tremor you can only hear when everything else goes quiet.

Air, a very faint high hum and a low pulse, like the ones Cage heard. Ask the group to raise a hand when they can tell each layer apart.

La misma melodía, con y sin aireThe same melody, with and without air

First eight notes run together over a continuous drone; then the same notes with silences between them. Ask which of the two "says" something.

A scale climbs and stops one step from the end. Three seconds of nothing. Watch the bodies: almost everyone leans forward. That silence isn't empty, it's full of expectation.

Cage lo dice asíCage puts it this way
“
There is no such thing as an empty space or an empty time. There is always something to see, something to hear. In fact, try as we may to make a silence, we cannot.
John Cage · «Música experimental», en Silencio (1961)John Cage · "Experimental Music", in Silence (1961)

The text comes from a 1957 talk. In the same passage Cage tells of the anechoic chamber. For whoever leads, the sentence works as a compass: your job in this session isn't to produce silence, but to help the group hear what lives in it.

Tensiones y señalesTensions and signals

Prolonged silence makes almost everyone uneasy, starting with the person leading. The temptation is to fill it with an explanation. Hold on. If you hold the silence without anxiety, the group learns that it can be done.

Someone will fill every pause with noise or jokes. It isn't sabotage: it's the person who feels the weight of silence the most, and usually the one who discovers the most once they finally go through it.

Qué mirar mientras jueganWhat to watch while they play

Who discovers sounds nobody else noticed. How each group negotiates who breaks the silence first: it tells you more about the group than any introduction round. If a piece uses silence to build tension and not just as a pause, point it out at the close. It's the natural bridge to the next session.
