Componer jugandoComposing at play
A workshop for designing conditions, not for giving answers.
Whoever leads this workshop doesn't teach music: they design the conditions for something to emerge.
Doce juegos, dos linajesTwelve games, two lineages
Composing at play condenses a 24-session workshop into twelve 90-minute meetings. It doesn't ask anyone to read scores or play an instrument: it asks for curiosity about sound and a certain willingness to look silly. Voices, classroom objects and a phone recorder are enough.
It inherits two lineages. From Edgar Morin's complex thought it takes seven ideas (emergence, self-organisation, dialogics and others) that aren't memorised: they're lived in the games. From the experimental music pedagogy of John Cage and R. Murray Schafer it takes an order: listen first, then organise, create last. These capsules go with you session by session.
Sesiones 1–4Sessions 1–4EscucharListening
Silencio, semilla, ritmo y color. Silence, seed, rhythm and colour. No theory: just attention. Here the group discovers that the ear can be trained and that almost nobody fully listens.
LemaMotto«Lo que no escuchas, no puedes componer.»"What you don't hear, you can't compose."
Sesiones 5–8Sessions 5–8OrganizarOrganising
Tension and rest, repetition and variation, harmony, dialogue between voices. Form appears when it's least sought; your job is not to impose it too early.
LemaMotto«Ordenar sin mandar.»"Order without commanding."
Sesiones 9–12Sessions 9–12CrearCreating
Improvisation, constraints that free, the block and its way out, the premiere. Each phase includes the previous ones: nothing is left behind, it expands.
LemaMotto«Lo tuyo aparece cuando dejas de buscarlo.»"Your own voice appears when you stop looking for it."
Three rings that contain one another. Each session is a point; each phase wraps the one before. The wave crossing them is listening: it starts at the centre and never dies out.
They're generated in the browser. Try them yourself first; then, if you like, with the group.
Emergencia · tres notas, un acordeEmergence · three notes, one chord
One note, then another, then another. At what moment do they stop being notes and become a chord? The new thing wasn't in any of them on its own.
Five knocks each start at their own pace. Each one only listens to the others. After a few seconds a shared pulse appears. It's what will happen when the group walks around the room without talking.
Dialógica · el choque y su reposoDialogics · the clash and its rest
Two adjacent notes that clash, then a chord that rests. The rest feels that way because it came after the clash: they need each other.
Qué no es este tallerWhat this workshop is not
-
Classical rules are tools, not laws. They show up when the game calls for them, never before. If you feel the urge to explain, save it for the close.
-
Never ask "who did it best?". Ask "what happened here that we didn't expect?". The first question shuts the group down; the second lights it up.

No es dejar hacerIt isn't anything goes
No corregir no significa no intervenir. Not correcting doesn't mean not intervening. You intervene obliquely: you change the conditions of the game, not people's behaviour. That takes more preparation, not less.
We must learn to navigate on a sea of uncertainties, sailing in and around islands of certainty.Edgar Morin · Los siete saberes necesarios para la educación del futuro (1999)Edgar Morin · Seven Complex Lessons in Education for the Future (1999)
Morin wrote that book for UNESCO, with teachers in mind. In this workshop the sentence has a concrete use: each session's mould is the archipelago; what the group does with it is the ocean. Your job is to tend the islands without trying to drain the sea.
Between sessions 7 and 10, almost the whole group will feel that what they compose is mediocre: the old tools no longer work and the new ones haven't arrived. It isn't failure, it's a phase transition. Name it from day one: announcing the crisis eases it, and on the other side there's usually a leap.
Evaluar la escucha, no el productoAssess listening, not the product
If you have to grade, look at how much the capacity to listen grew, one's own and others': taking part in listenings, the richness of the notebook, willingness to try the uncomfortable. If someone leaves with more questions than they came with, the workshop worked.
¿Qué parte de ti quiere corregir antes de escuchar? What part of you wants to correct before listening?
What did you once learn without anyone teaching you?
What do you do when a group produces something you didn't expect?
Which condition in your classroom could you change without saying a word?
How would you know the group has started listening to one another?
What scares you about leading a music workshop without knowing music?
A notebook per person, a phone recorder and headphones. And something odd: time to get bored between sessions, where composing keeps working on its own.
